Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Qualify For Your Services?

Master royalties: Advances from major label releases typically recoup around 20 million Spotify streams. But this depends on how much your received as an advance, what royalty you received, and how the label handled accounting.

Advance collection: For major label releases, we typically support with songs that have 2+ million streams on Spotify. For indie releases, we typically support with that have 5+ million streams.

Publishing deals: If your songs have more than 10 million streams on Spotify then you can book a call with us and we will let you know if we can support.

Please fill out our Service Request Form to begin, and we will reach out to you as soon as possible!

Do Publishers Collect Master Royalties?

NO! This is an extremely common misconception. There is a completely seperate proces to collecting master royalties which is far more complicated than collecting your publishing.

What's The Difference Between Publishing Royalties and Master Royalties?

When negotiating the terms of your agreement, there are two percentages that must be agreed upon - your master royalty and publishing ownership percentage.

There are two types of publishing royalties - public performance (collected by performing rights organizations like BMI, ASCAP, or your country's PRO) and mechanical royalties (you need to be signed with a publisher to collect all of these).

Master royalties only begin to be paid once your advance recoups, but 95% of advances never recoup so most producers never receive these. Labels typically do not automatically send out master royalty checks.

Therefore, you must reach out to them and inquire about the status of your recoupment once your song reaches about 20 million streams and sign up with their royalty payment system.

Why Have I Never Heard About Master Royalties?

We call master royalties the label's best kept secret. Less than 5% of major songs generate enough for the producer to be owed them, so not hardly anyone has experience collecting them. Then the labels don't pay them out automatically once they are owed them. There is an entirely seperate process that takes many months to get through, and can be impossible to get through without represetatives that have good relationships with the label. Also, unlike the publishing industry which has been around forever, this new master royalty payout system for producers is less than 20 years old.

How Can I Check If I'm Collecting Master Royalties?

All of the major labels have a royalty system that they use to pay out master royalties. We suggest trying to login to the links below. If you aren't able to login to the label's system then you are almost definitely not collecting your master royalties and must get set up.

Warner: https://www.wmg.com/artist-royalties

Sony: https://sme-artistportal.com/?profile=classic

Universal: https://www.umgroyalty.com/Login.aspx?ac=logout

Master royalties are typically paid out twice a year directly by the label. If you are not receiving these payments, then you are not getting paid master royalties.

Are SoundExchange Royalties and Master Royalties The Same Thing?

NO! SoundExchange collects a specific type of master royalties - digital performance royalties. When we say "master royalties" we are referring to ALL the other royalties that the song makes except SoundExchange royalties. These are all collected by the label, and supposed to be paid to producers and artists after their advance recoups.

We are able to help collect SoundExchange royalties. However, since SoundExchange does not pay out much, we only offer SoundExchange royalty collection for those who are working with us with one of our other services.

How Much Do You Charge?

It varies depending on the situation and how much is available to collect, but we typically charge 15-30% of whatever we help a client collect. There is no upfront fee to work with us. If you qualify for our service must first hop on a call with you to get the full details of your situation and let you know what we can do.

Keep in mind, we have proven negotiation strategies and relationships to get you the most money, so we are able to get many of our clients paid much more than they would have received without our support.

How Much Do You Think I'll Get Paid?

Master royalties: There are far too many variables for us to give you a number without understanding your situation. Please contact us to discuss this.

Advance collection: For small artists signed to major labels, the typical advance fee ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. However, having an experienced representative that the labels and lawyers know adds a lot of leverage, and they are far more likely to agree to higher advances. We've gotten a producer a $15,000 (all-in) advance for his first placement. Keep in mind that every situation is different, and these terms would be split with your co-producers.

How Long Does It Typically Take To Get Paid?

Typically, our clients are paid within 2-6 months from the time we start working with them, but it can take longer. Even though our clients get paid much faster than almost anyone else, the placement process can still be drawn out and unpredictable.
